Construction Has Begun!

Starting our basement!

Our Builder, Ed Broome, of Coy Broome Builders

Spencer and Mr. Cureton "shooting" the area to make sure they know where and how deep to dig!

Here we go! Spencer taking the first scoop of dirt. Our new house is started!

How exciting to finally start the grading work. Tommy Vaughn's crew (Vaughn Contracting) has been out in full force grading the back area and digging out for the basement. We are thrilled to have finally begun construction!
(Note: Blogsite date is 4/23/09 but the digging actually began 3/11/09. I didn't have the blogsite set up on 3/11 so these pictures were posted on FB and added to my blogsite at a later date.)

The Journey

Our building journey began almost three years ago when we purchased a small tract of land about a mile and a half from Polkton, NC. For non-Polkton or non-Anson County bloggers, Polkton is located about 45 miles southeast of Charlotte, NC or about 20 miles southeast of Monroe, NC. I'm not sure about the population of Polkton, but it's small enough not to have a traffic light (which is absolutely alright with me)! It's a neat little town with several churches, a couple or three businesses, and train tracks that run on the southwest side of town. I'm sure in its day it was a bustling little place, but these days it's mostly an intersection where city folks from Matthews or Mint Hill pass through from hwy. 218 on their way to the beach.

My husband, Paul, and I fell in love with the tract of land and could envision someday having a house sitting on the property....but, there was one small problem...I have always been a "town" girl most of my adult life, having lived in Wadesboro, NC (population maybe 5,000), so Paul had to do some fancy talking to get me to agree to build on our land!! But, with lots of promises and unlimited cajoling (aka nagging), he finally convinced me that in the country is where we needed to be.

In the fall of 2008, we began in earnest our search for a builder and after talking with several contractors, chose a builder who has years of experience and most importantly to us, actually builds the house himself. He came with excellent referrals and a cheerful spirit, so we are looking forward to a great working relationship with him.
After considering several possible locations, we decided on a site for the house that is on a small hill about 1200 feet off the road. The house will sit on the hill behind the pond and on the far side of the pines that are in this pic. We, as well as our animals, will have lots of room to run!!

So, two of the most important aspects of building have been chosen: the site and the builder...we are on our way to our future home!!!
